What Is Sadaqah Jariyah?
Sadaqah jariyah is charity that keeps giving after you have given it.
Most charity is a single act. You give, someone benefits, it is done. Sadaqah jariyah is different. The benefit carries on, and so does the reward, long after the moment you gave.
It is reported in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said that when a person dies their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them.
That first one is sadaqah jariyah.
What Counts As Sadaqah Jariyah?
There is no fixed list. The principle is simple: if the good continues, the reward continues.
Scholars commonly point to acts such as:
- Building or funding a water source so people can drink for years, not for a day
- Educating a child so the knowledge stays with them and passes to others
- Supporting an orphan through the years it takes them to stand on their own
- Funding a place of worship or study
- Planting trees or crops that keep feeding people
- Contributing to medical facilities that keep treating patients
The common thread is time. A meal feeds someone once. A well feeds a village for years.
Is Sponsoring An Orphan Sadaqah Jariyah?
It is one of the clearest examples.
A sponsored child does not receive a one off gift. They receive food, healthcare, clothing and schooling, month after month, through the years that decide the rest of their life.
The education alone carries forward. What that child learns, they carry, and often pass on.
Aid For Mankind currently supports 17 children in Gaza who have lost their fathers. They are not a statistic. Each one has a name, a face and a story, and you can choose who you sponsor.

Sadaqah jariyah for someone who has passed away
You can give sadaqah jariyah on behalf of a parent, a spouse, a child, or anyone who has died. The intention is that the reward reaches them. It is a way of continuing to do something for someone when there is nothing else left to do.
You do not need to announce it, register it, or name it publicly. The intention is between you and Allah.

Yes. Monthly giving is well suited to sadaqah jariyah because the benefit is ongoing by design. You can set up a monthly gift or give once.
How much sadaqah jariyah should I give?
There is no minimum and no maximum. Consistency matters more than size. A small regular gift often outlasts a single large one.
Can I give sadaqah jariyah for my parents while they are alive?
Yes. You can give on behalf of anyone, living or deceased.
What is the best sadaqah jariyah?
There is no single answer, and be cautious of anyone who tells you there is. The strongest sadaqah jariyah is the one that meets a real need and keeps meeting it. Water, education and the care of orphans are the examples scholars return to most often.
Is sadaqah jariyah the same as zakat?
No. Zakat is obligatory and has fixed rules on amount and recipients. Sadaqah jariyah is voluntary and has neither.
Types of sadaqah jariyah
Sadaqah is voluntary charity of any amount. Sadaqah jariyah is voluntary charity whose benefit continues. Zakat is an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% of qualifying wealth, given to the eight categories set out in the Qur’an. Sadaqah jariyah is not a separate obligation. It is sadaqah that has been directed at something lasting.
