Fidya and Kaffarah 2027: rates, rules and how to pay
If you missed fasts in Ramadan, what you owe depends on why you missed them. Fidya applies when someone is unable to fast and cannot make the days up later. Kaffarah applies when a fast was broken deliberately without a valid reason. The two are not interchangeable.

Fidya and Kaffarah rates for 2027
These rates follow the national figure published for Britain each year, which is reviewed against the price of wheat. They are indicative until the figure for Ramadan 1448 is published closer to the time, and we will update this page when it is.
What is fidya and who pays it?
Fidya is paid by someone who is unable to fast and who is not expected to be able to make those days up later. It is a compensation, not a penalty.
It typically applies in cases such as chronic or long-term illness, frailty in old age, or a permanent condition that makes fasting unsafe. It does not apply to someone who is temporarily unwell, travelling, pregnant or breastfeeding and who is able to make the fasts up at another time. In those cases the missed days are made up rather than paid for.
If you are able to make the fasts up
Then you make them up. Fidya is not an alternative to fasting for someone who is capable of it. If you are unsure which applies to you, speak to a scholar you trust before paying.
What is kaffarah, and the order that matters
Kaffarah applies where a fast in Ramadan was broken deliberately, without a valid reason. It is worth being clear about something that is often left out of charity pages.
- Fast sixty consecutive days. This is the primary expiation. If a day is missed in the middle, the count restarts.
- If you are genuinely unable to do that, for example because of ill health, then feed sixty people in need. This is where the £300 figure comes from, at £5 per person.

Fidya and kaffarah are for feeding people in need. We value the obligation at UK food prices, because that is where our donors live, and we deliver the food where it is needed most and where it goes furthest.
Depending on where the greatest need is at the time, that means our programmes in Gaza, Yemen, Pakistan, Uganda and Lebanon. Your payment is allocated to feeding programmes, not to general running costs.
Aid For Mankind operates a strict 100% donation policy. Every pound given to an appeal goes to that appeal, with our running costs covered separately.

How much is fidya in 2027?
We use £5 for each missed fast, which comes to £150 for a full month of thirty. The figure is the UK cost of the staple food measure the obligation is based on, roughly 1.5 to 2kg of wheat per day, understood as feeding one person.
How much is kaffarah in 2027?
£300 for each fast broken deliberately, which is sixty people fed at £5 each. Bear in mind that fasting sixty consecutive days is the primary expiation, and feeding is the route for those genuinely unable to do so.
Do rates differ by the country you work in?
No. The obligation is a quantity of staple food, and the monetary value is worked out at prices where the person paying lives rather than where the food is distributed. Our donors are in the UK, so we use UK prices. The food itself is delivered where the need is greatest.
I am pregnant or breastfeeding. Do I pay fidya?
Generally no, if you are able to make the fasts up later, in which case the missed days are made up rather than paid for. Circumstances vary, so speak to a scholar you trust about your own situation.
Can I pay fidya for someone who has passed away?
This is commonly done on behalf of a relative who died with missed fasts outstanding. Views differ on the detail, so it is worth checking with a scholar you trust.
When should I pay?
Fidya is usually paid during or shortly after Ramadan, though it can be paid earlier. Paying early helps us plan food distributions rather than receiving everything in the final days.
