The Prophet's ﷺ answer
"Yes."A man whose mother died suddenly asked whether she would be rewarded if he gave charity on her behalf. The answer was a single word - and it settled the question for every generation since.

When Sa'd ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) lost his mother while he was away, he could not sit still with his grief. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked what he could still do for her.
The answer was water. So he dug a well, and dedicated it with five words: "This is for Umm Sa'd."

What Counts as Sadaqah Jariyah for the Deceased?

Sadaqah for the Deceased - Your Questions Answered
Does the reward really reach them?
Yes. The narration of the man whose mother died (reported in Sahih al-Bukhari) is direct on this point, and scholars of all major Sunni schools accept charity given on behalf of the deceased. You lose nothing either - the one who gives is also rewarded for honouring their loved one.
Can I give on behalf of my deceased parents?
Yes - and it is considered among the finest acts of dutifulness to parents after they have gone. It is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud that a man from Banu Salamah asked the Prophet ﷺ whether any dutifulness to his parents remained after their death, and giving in charity for them was among what was named, alongside praying for them and honouring their ties.
Is sadaqah jariyah better than one-off sadaqah for the deceased?
Both reach them. Ongoing charity has the special quality named in the narration reported in Sahih Muslim - it keeps rewarding for as long as it keeps benefiting. A one-off gift of food is real charity in their name; a share in running water keeps writing reward day after day. Many families choose both.
Can I give sadaqah for someone who was not a relative?
Yes. A friend, a teacher, a neighbour - anyone. The texts on charity for the deceased are not limited to family.
What about giving on the 40th day, or at a khatam gathering?
Practice varies between communities, and Aid For Mankind does not take a position on it. What all communities agree on is the core: charity given sincerely on behalf of your loved one benefits them - on any day of the year. If your family marks particular days, sadaqah given then is as valid as sadaqah given at any other time.
When is the best time to give sadaqah for someone who has passed away?
Straight away is best - the narration of the man whose mother died shows charity given promptly after death. But there is no expiry. A year later, ten years later, on their anniversary or on a quiet Tuesday - the door does not close.
Can I give zakat on behalf of someone who has passed away?
Zakat is an obligation on the living, and sadaqah - not zakat - is the usual gift in a loved one's name. If your loved one passed away owing missed zakat, many scholars advise that it be paid from their estate; practice varies between communities, so speak to your local imam about their specific situation. Sadaqah on their behalf is open to everyone, at any time.
Can several family members give together?
Yes. Siblings and families often share one gift - a well, or a period of orphan care - in a parent's name. Each giver takes the full reward of what they gave, and the dedication carries the loved one's name.
How does the dedication work?
Add their name when you give. Your gift is given on their behalf, and the reward is written for them, by Allah's permission. The intention itself is what makes the sadaqah theirs.
