Laylatul Qadr 2027: when the last ten nights fall

The last ten nights of Ramadan 1448 are expected to begin on the evening of Saturday 27 February 2027. The 27th night, the one most people look for, is expected on the night of Friday 5 into Saturday 6 March 2027.

Nobody knows for certain which night it is. All dates here are expected and shift by a day if the moon of Ramadan is sighted on 9 February rather than 8 February.

An Islamic night begins at sunset, before the day it belongs to. So the night of the 27th of Ramadan starts on the evening of Friday 5 March and runs through until dawn on Saturday 6 March. This catches people out every year, and it is the single most useful thing to understand on this page.

Note on the 27th night. Many communities give it particular attention, and there are reports from the companions favouring it. It has never been narrated as certain, which is precisely why the last ten nights are given as a set. Treat the 27th as likely, not as the only night that counts.

What it is

What Laylatul Qadr means

Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree, is the night the Qur’an began to be revealed. Allah describes it in Surah al-Qadr as better than a thousand months, which is a little over eighty three years, longer than most lifetimes.

Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

Surah al-Qadr, 97:1-3

It is reported in Jami at-Tirmidhi that Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, what she should say if she found the night. He taught her: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni - O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.

I’tikaf

Spending the last ten days in i’tikaf

I’tikaf means withdrawing into the mosque for worship over the last ten days of Ramadan. It is the practice the Prophet, peace be upon him, kept every year, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

The Hanafi position. I’tikaf of the last ten days is sunnah mu’akkadah ’ala al-kifayah. It is a stressed sunnah on the community rather than on each individual, so if one person in the locality performs it, the responsibility is lifted from the rest. If nobody does, the whole community is considered to have left a stressed sunnah.

For women. In the Hanafi school a woman performs i’tikaf in the place she normally prays at home, not in the mosque. She sets that space aside and remains within it for the duration, leaving only for genuine need.

If you are considering i’tikaf, speak to your local mosque early. Places and arrangements are usually settled well before Ramadan begins.

Giving

Why so much charity is given on these nights

If a good deed on Laylatul Qadr carries the weight described in Surah al-Qadr, it is easy to see why people want their giving to land on it. The difficulty is obvious. You cannot know which night it is, so you cannot aim at it.

There are two sensible ways round this, and neither of them is complicated.

Give across all ten nights

Split what you intended to give into ten and give a portion each night. Whichever night it turns out to be, you gave on it. Many people find this easier on the pocket than one large gift as well.

Give to something that runs every night

A practical point. Set your giving up before the last ten nights begin, not during them. The nights are short, sleep is broken, and the intention people most often lose is the one they left until later.

Zakat

Paying zakat in the last ten nights

A great many people time their annual zakat to land in Ramadan, and often in the last ten nights specifically. Zakat is due once a lunar year has passed on wealth held above the nisab threshold, so the timing of payment is a choice rather than a rule for most people.

Two Hanafi points worth knowing. First, the nisab needs to be met at the start and at the end of your zakat year. What your wealth does in between does not break the year, which is a mercy for anyone whose balance moves around. Second, where a person holds mixed assets, Hanafis generally apply the silver nisab, which is the lower of the two, because it means more people pay and more reaches those entitled to it.
