Last updated: Saturday 5 September 2026. This page sets out, in plain English and with sources, the timeline of the Gaza ceasefire and peace deal, what the Board of Peace actually is, and an honest account of what has and has not happened yet.

The timeline, plainly

  • 29 September 2025President Trump unveiled a 20-point "Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict" alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • Late September 2025Trump announced the creation of the "Board of Peace" as part of phase two of the plan, and was named its inaugural chair.
  • Late September to October 2025The United States, Israel and Hamas agreed to the plan's initial phase, including a ceasefire and hostage and prisoner exchanges.
  • 17 November 2025The UN Security Council formally endorsed the plan in Resolution 2803, passed 13-0 with Russia and China abstaining.
  • 13 May 2026Board of Peace envoy Nikolay Mladenov said the ceasefire's durability hinged on Hamas disarmament, an early statement of the sequencing dispute that would run through the summer.
  • 30 July 2026Hamas and the Board of Peace announced agreement on a disarmament roadmap, described as the move into the plan's "next phase," with a detailed timetable due within 14 days.
  • 31 July 2026It remained unresolved whether non-Hamas armed groups would also disarm, and whether Israeli forces would in practice fully withdraw.
  • 4 August 2026The Board of Peace stated there would be no Israeli withdrawal from Gaza before Hamas disarms, hardening the sequencing dispute.
  • 29 August 2026Mladenov warned Gaza was at risk of being "gone for good" without reconstruction, withdrawal and demilitarisation proceeding together.
  • 19 August to 3 September 202629 ceasefire violations were reported, alongside a report that Israeli forces captured a Hamas security chief.
  • 4-5 September 2026Hamas continued to say it would not disarm before an Israeli withdrawal and halt to attacks; Israel continued to say it would not withdraw before disarmament. The dispute remains unresolved as of this update.

Who is the Board of Peace?

  • Created: announced by President Trump in late September 2025, as phase two of the 20-point peace plan, with Trump as its inaugural chair.
  • Members include: senior officials from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt and the UAE, plus US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump aide Jared Kushner, and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
  • Purpose: under the plan, the Board is intended to set the framework and handle funding for Gaza's redevelopment, until the Palestinian Authority completes a reform programme and can resume control of Gaza.

What has been implemented, and what has not

Implemented

  • A ceasefire has been in force since around October 2025, with periods of improved aid access.
  • Hostage and prisoner exchanges under the plan's initial phase.
  • UN Security Council endorsement of the overall plan (Resolution 2803, 17 November 2025).
  • Agreement in principle on a disarmament roadmap (30 July 2026).
  • A measurable decline in acute malnutrition, attributed by OCHA to scaled-up nutrition programmes since the ceasefire began.

Not yet implemented

  • A finalised and verified Hamas disarmament timetable.
  • Full Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza.
  • Disarmament of Palestinian armed groups other than Hamas.
  • Agreement on which side moves first: Israeli withdrawal, or Hamas disarmament.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a ceasefire in Gaza right now?

Yes. A ceasefire has been in force since around October 2025, though ceasefire violations continue to be reported, including 29 between 19 August and 3 September 2026.

What is the Board of Peace?

The Board of Peace is a body created in late September 2025 as part of the wider peace plan, chaired by President Trump, with members including senior officials from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt and the UAE, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump aide Jared Kushner, and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Its role under the plan is to set the framework and handle funding for Gaza's redevelopment until the Palestinian Authority can resume control.

Has Hamas agreed to disarm?

Hamas and the Board of Peace announced agreement on a disarmament roadmap on 30 July 2026. However, Hamas has since said it will not implement the agreement unless Israel first halts attacks and withdraws its troops.

Has Israel withdrawn its troops from Gaza?

No. Israel's government has said it will not withdraw until Hamas is fully disarmed, and the Board of Peace stated on 4 August 2026 that there would be no Israeli withdrawal before Hamas disarms. Full withdrawal had not happened as of early September 2026.

Why did an envoy warn Gaza could be "gone for good"?

On 29 August 2026, Board of Peace envoy Nikolay Mladenov warned that without reconstruction, an Israeli withdrawal and demilitarisation proceeding together, Gaza risked being "gone for good," and that deteriorating conditions could trigger a fresh security crisis.
