Why Muslims Build a Well as an Act of Ongoing Charity
For generations, Muslims have chosen to build a well or donate a well because flowing water is one of the clearest examples of sadaqah jariyah, ongoing charity that continues to benefit people long after it is given. Every time someone drinks, cooks or washes with that water, the giver is remembered, by Allah's permission.

Why You Cannot Build a Water Well in Gaza
Every water well charity gets asked the same question right now: can we build a well in Gaza? The honest answer is no, and it has nothing to do with funding. It is the ground itself.
The United Nations has reported that around 97% of Gaza's groundwater is contaminated, poisoned by sewage, seawater intrusion and years of destruction. Drilling a new well into ground like this does not produce clean water, it simply produces more of the same contaminated supply. You cannot build a well sadaqah jariyah out of water that will make a family sick.
That is the reality behind every search to build a water well in Gaza, or to donate a well for a family there. The land will not allow it. So the question is not whether people need clean water, it clearly is needed, it is how you actually get it to them when a well is not possible.

A Traditional Well
A well serves one village while the water lasts, and only where the ground actually allows one to be dug. In Gaza, that ground is contaminated, so this option is not on the table.

Is this the same reward as building a well?
Yes, by Allah's permission. The reward of sadaqah jariyah is tied to the ongoing benefit a gift provides, not the shape of the project. A well and a desalination plant both deliver flowing water to people in need, and that continuing benefit is the basis of the reward, by Allah's permission.
Can I dedicate my gift?
Yes. You can build water in your own name, or dedicate it to a loved one, living or deceased, as an ongoing sadaqah jariyah on their behalf.
Is this zakat-eligible?

Where exactly does my money go?
