What Is Zakat, and How Is It Calculated?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory act of worship in which a Muslim gives 2.5% of their qualifying wealth to those entitled to receive it, once that wealth has been held for a full lunar year and is at or above the nisab threshold. Below is a quick guide to how it applies to the most common types of wealth.
When is zakat due?
Zakat becomes due once your wealth has remained at or above the nisab threshold for one full lunar year. This date is personal to you, based on when your wealth first reached nisab, so zakat can fall due at any point in the year, not only during Ramadan, although many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for its extra reward.
What does nisab mean?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold before zakat becomes obligatory. It is traditionally measured using either 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. Because metal prices move daily, the pound value of nisab changes with them, which is why this calculator lets you adjust the price per gram.
Zakat on gold, explained
Zakat on gold is worked out on the current resale value of gold you own, including coins, bars and, according to many scholars, jewellery kept for regular wear. Enter the weight in grams and today's gold price, and the calculator works out the pound value for you.
Zakat on savings
Cash held in current accounts, savings accounts and at home all counts towards your zakatable wealth. Add your total cash and savings, deduct any debts due immediately, then compare the figure against the nisab threshold.
